Bathroom Renovations Wanaka — What We've Learned After Years of Working on Local Homes

Wanaka has a vast range of beautiful homes to renovate. The dramatic alpine setting, the tight-knit community, the mix of holiday homes and permanent residences. It all shapes what a bathroom renovation here should look and feel like.
After years of working on homes across the Wanaka region, we've seen what works, what doesn't, and what genuinely matters when you're updating a bathroom in this part of the country.

The climate is the first thing to plan around
Central Otago has some of the most extreme temperature swings in New Zealand.
Cold, dry winters and warm summers. A bathroom that feels fine in January can feel brutal by July if it hasn't been designed with warmth in mind. Heated tile floors aren't a luxury here; they're something our clients are grateful for from the first frost.
"In Wanaka, a bathroom that isn't warm in winter is a bathroom that hasn't been finished properly."
We always think about insulation in walls as part of the bathroom design, not as an afterthought. In older Wanaka homes, particularly the cribs and early-2000s houses, there's often very little thermal performance in the bathroom. Addressing this during a renovation makes a genuine, lasting difference to daily comfort.
What Wanaka homes actually look like
The housing stock here is varied. You've got original cribs full of character, 1990s and early-2000s builds, and newer architecturally designed or group home builder homes.
Each type comes with its own quirks when it comes to bathroom renovation. Some have had showers leak, the most common issue we come across. Others look extremely dated, some are tiny, and some have layouts that simply don't function well.
Every Wanaka bathroom renovation we take on starts with understanding what the home is, and who it's for.
Holiday homes have different priorities
A significant portion of Wanaka properties are used as short-term rentals or holiday homes, and bathrooms in those properties need to work harder than most.
Durability matters enormously. Grout that stains easily, tapware that doesn't hold up to high traffic, or surfaces that are difficult to clean will cause headaches for years.
This is why we ask the important questions during our initial consultations. We want to make sure we're specifying the right products and materials for how the space will actually be used.
Renovating for the long term - Bathrooms that will last for generations
A large number of the people we work with in Wanaka aren't chasing trends. They want a bathroom that works beautifully today and keeps working beautifully for decades. A space that adds genuine value to the home, not just a refresh that dates quickly.
The conversations we have are less about what looks good in a magazine and more about how the space actually feels to use every single day. Practicality, comfort, and longevity guide every decision we make.
Accessibility matters too. Whether that's for a growing family, a guest who needs a little more space to move or simply designing a bathroom that will still work perfectly for you in twenty years. We think about this from the very beginning, not as an add-on at the end.
Here are the main things we recommend considering for your Wanaka bathroom renovation:
Walk-in showers
The traditional over-bath shower is one of the first things our clients want gone. A well-designed walk-in shower with a low or level entry is safer, easier to clean, more accessible, and looks great, too. There's no compromise here between function and aesthetics.
A tiled niche or half wall is a must-have for storing shampoo, soap, and everything else. A foot recess is a great bonus too; it makes shaving your legs easier, and the whole shower just feels more considered.
We use Atlantis tiled shower systems and have trusted this product for decades.

LED Strip lighting under the vanity
There is nothing worse than having to get up during the night to use the toilet and having to turn the main light on. You're fumbling for the switch, and when you find it, it's blinding, waking you (and anyone else in the bedroom) up completely.
This is why an LED strip light under the vanity is a must-have in our eyes. We always put them on a sensor, so there's no fumbling around at all.
A lot of our clients find they hardly ever turn the main lights on anymore. The LED strip gives a lovely ambient glow, and it's a nice way to wind down before bed when you're showering at night.

Matte/Brushed Finishes
Matte tiles are a must-have on the floor, not just for the non-slip factor, but for how easy they are to keep clean. Matte basins bring a level of subtle class into the bathroom, and again, are much easier to maintain than their gloss counterparts.
We pair brushed tapware finishes with the matte tiles. Brushed nickel, brushed bronze, and brushed brass all work beautifully in Wanaka bathrooms; they feel considered without being fussy.
We love the Caroma Contura tapware range, the PVD finish is one of the best we have come across, and the after-sales service is top-notch.

Epoxy grout
Standard grout is porous. It absorbs moisture, stains over time, and eventually cracks, meaning you're regrouting years before you should have to. In a holiday home, that's a maintenance headache. In a forever home, it's just frustrating.
Epoxy grout is a different product entirely. It's non-porous, so it won't absorb moisture or stain. It's far harder wearing, so it holds its colour and integrity for years longer. And because it doesn't harbour bacteria or mould the way standard grout does, it's more hygienic, something that matters in a room that is exposed to moisture every day.
The finish looks better for longer too. Grout that stays clean and consistent makes the whole bathroom look cared for, even years down the track.
We specify epoxy grout on every bathroom renovation we do in Wanaka. It costs a little more upfront, but it's one of those decisions clients are consistently glad they made.

Ventilation and Underfloor Heating — Two Things That Work Together
These two features are often thought about separately, but in a Wanaka bathroom both are a must.
Underfloor heating keeps the room warm. Stepping out of the shower onto a warm floor on a Central Otago winter morning is something you notice every single day. But warmth without airflow creates moisture problems, and in Wānaka's cold winters, a bathroom that isn't properly ventilated will show it eventually.
Good ventilation removes that moisture before it can settle. A correctly sized extraction fan, specified for the actual volume of the room, keeps the air fresh and dry without fighting against the warmth you've paid to put in.
The two systems complement each other perfectly; one creates the comfort, the other protects it.

Trusted branded products
There is nothing worse than when a company doesn't stand by their product or when you need a replacement part years down the track, and it simply doesn't exist anymore. We've seen it cause real headaches for homeowners, and in some cases, genuinely costly damage.
This is why we're deliberate about what we specify. Every product we use comes from a brand we trust, with solid warranties, reliable supply chains, and people behind them who actually pick up the phone.
The brands we work with a lot on our Wanaka bathroom renovations include:
These aren't just names on a list; they're brands we've built relationships with over a decade, and products we would specify in our own home without hesitation.

A great bathroom renovation isn't just about how it looks on day one. It's about how it performs in the middle of a Wānaka winter five years from now. The right products, the right finishes, the right tradespeople, it all adds up to a space that works beautifully and keeps working beautifully.
If you're thinking about a bathroom renovation in Wanaka, we'd love to hear about your project. Get in touch and let's start with a conversation.
